Background

In the United States, about 1 million people have ulcerative colitis (UC). Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that affects the large intestines. It is a lifelong illness that has a significant toll on the emotional and social aspects of life. Signs and symptoms of ulcerative colitis include but are not limited to: rectal pain, rectal bleeding, the urgency to defecate, but the inability to despite the need.

Researchers are seeking new ways to help those with ulcerative colitis. Currently, there are several treatments and observational research studies being conducted for ulcerative colitis. Those experiencing flare-ups and who meet the criteria will be assigned to the treatment studies. However, those who are not experiencing active UC symptoms but still meet the criteria, will be assigned to the observational study. If a potential participant assigned to the observational study is experiencing flare-ups, they may be eligible to participate in any of the interventional (treatment) studies.

These research studies are looking for adults 18 years old or older who are diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. Participants must be willing to comply with the necessary requirements.

Why Participate?

  • Participants may experience potential improvements to their ulcerative colitis signs and symptoms (though there’s no guarantee that (1) these investigational treatments will work, (2) that participants will receive the new potential therapy, and (3) that there will be no risks of harm).
  • Participants may receive additional care and attention from the clinical trial staff for their ulcerative colitis at no cost.
  • Participants may help others who are living with ulcerative colitis in the future.
  • Participants will be helping to advance medical research and knowledge.
  • Participants will be compensated for time and travel participation in this study.

Your Rights

  • If you decide to participate in any of these research studies and later feel that you no longer wish to be part of it, you may withdraw at any time.
  • Your records relating to this study and any other information received will be kept strictly confidential as described in the Informed Consent Form that participants are provided prior to participating in the study, except as required by law.
