Location: 176 Hawkesbury Rd, Westmead NSW 2145
Lead Doctor: Associate Professor Michael Kohn
Ethics Committee: This study is sponsored by the University of Sydney and has been approved by the WSLHD Human Research Ethics Committee.

Background

Binge eating is when a person consumes large quantities of food in a short period of time, that is usually more than what averagely is consumed. Regular episodes of binge eating is often accompanied by feelings of loss of control, and in many cases, guilt or embarrassment. Some feel like they are unable to stop, even if they are already uncomfortably full.

Binge Eating Disorder is the most prevalent eating disorder, however it is largely under-diagnosed and under-treated. Researchers believe that many practitioners are still not aware that there could be a medication treatment option for Binge Eating Disorder. Researchers are currently investigating how the medication Vyvanse works to reduce binge-eating symptoms. Vyvanse has been approved for the  treatment of binge eating disorder, however understanding this medications effect may allow clinicians to better identify those who may benefit from this treatment, and raise awareness in the wider community of an effective and safe treatment option.
