Background

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a common infection that causes painful sores in and around the mouth, commonly referred to as “cold sores”. Current topical treatments like creams need to be applied regularly to slightly reduce the symptoms and duration of cold sores.

This research study explores if a new natural topical treatment containing herbs (Hypericum perforatum and Calendula officinalis) and a mineral (copper sulfate), compared to a placebo (a treatment  that looks the same but doesn’t contain any active ingredients), could potentially reduce the severity of symptoms and duration of cold sores after just one application.

This study seeks men and women 18-65 who currently have a cold sore that is less than 48 hours old. Participants are required to attend 2 pharmacy visits at a convenient pharmacy location over a 1 month period and will be compensated with a $60 voucher to cover travel and related expenses for participating in this study.

Your Rights

• If you decide to participate in the study and later feel that you no longer wish to be part of it, you may withdraw at any time.
• Your records relating to this study and any other information received will be kept strictly confidential, except as required by the law.
• Qualified health professionals will monitor your health as it relates to the study.

Who Can Participate?

• Men and women aged 18-65 
• It’s been less than 48 hours since your cold sore symptoms started and:
  • Your cold sore has NOT turned into an ulcer yet (this is where the blisters have burst).
  • You have NOT used another treatment for your cold sore.
• You have had at least three previous outbreaks or episodes of cold sores.
• Able to attend 2 visits at a pharmacy that is convenient to you, 1 visit being before your cold sore is 48 hours old and the second visit once your cold sore has healed.
