About the Study

Can e-cigarettes help people stop smoking? E-cigarettes are handheld devices that allow users to inhale nicotine in a vapor. Some people use e-cigarettes to stop cigarette smoking, but more research is needed to see if doing so is effective.

This research study aims to understand how different flavors can make e-cigarettes more attractive. The results of our research may help lawmakers understand and decide what type of e-cigarettes should be sold in communities and whether or not they will help people to stop smoking cigarettes.

Why Participate?

  • Participants will be compensated up to $575 for participating in this study. An additional compensation of $25 may also be received for each friend a participant refers to participate in the study.
  • Participants will be helping to advance medical research on e-cigarettes.
  • Participants can opt to join other research studies on smoking that are conducted by the research center if they find that they are not eligible for this study or if they want to participate while they wait for a spot in this study to open.
  • After completing the study, participants will be given information about the potential risks of continued smoking and will be provided with encouragement to think about changing their tobacco use behaviors and access to quitting resources.

Your Rights

  • If you decide to participate in the study and later feel that you no longer wish to be part of it, you can withdraw at any time.
  • Any information that you provide will be kept strictly confidential, except as required by law.
  • Qualified health professionals will monitor your health as it relates to the study.
  • Prior to participating in this research study, you will be asked to have an informed discussion with a member of the study team who will review a written document that includes a description of procedures and identifies any risks to participation, for example. You will be able to ask questions and if you decide to proceed and sign consent, you will receive a copy of the fully signed document.

  • Must not be currently seeking treatment to stop smoking or plan to stop using e-cigarettes
  • Must be able to attend 1 remote visit, 1 brief (10-minute) in-person visit, 4 study visits at the research site, and 2 brief phone follow-up appointments

Key Study Details

The study team will explain the research study in its entirety but some study details are:

  • Participants will be asked to use an e-cigarette that will be provided to them. They will also be asked to complete questionnaires.
  • Study sessions will last for approximately 1-3 hours (depending on the session) and there will be a minimum of 24 hours between each session.
  • Once enrolled in the study, participants will be asked to stop using all tobacco products (e.g. cigarettes and e-cigarettes) and marijuana for 12 hours prior to each lab session.
  • The e-cigarette provided to participants will contain nicotine and a different flavor for each session. E-cigarettes will be sanitized between sessions.
  • Participants will be asked to complete 30-minute follow-up appointments via telephone, 1 month and 6 months after their last session.
  • Participants can opt to join other research studies on smoking that are conducted by the research center if they find that they are not eligible for this study, if they want to participate while they wait for a spot in this study to open, or after completing this study.
