Researchers Explore A Natural Alternative For Pre-Diabetes and Diabetes

Background

 

Pre-diabetes is a condition wherein blood sugar levels are slightly higher than normal but not high enough to be considered Diabetes. Diabetes is a condition wherein blood sugar levels are above the normal range. These conditions may be managed by lifestyle or medication. 

Researchers are exploring natural alternatives that may help manage Pre-diabetes and Diabetes. This study seeks to explore the effectiveness of the Dahlia plant’s flower extract as a new potential treatment for Pre-diabetes and Diabetes. Researchers also want to determine the best way (including dosage) to use the flower extract of the Dahlia plant that would benefit those with Pre-diabetes and Diabetes. 

This study is looking for men aged 18 years old and above who have either Pre-diabetes or Type 2 Diabetes. Interested participants must be managing their condition through lifestyle changes or by taking Metformin as their medication. Participants must be willing to comply with all the study requirements.

  • Qualified health professionals will monitor your health as it relates to the study.

Who Can Participate?

 

  • Men  aged 18 years old or older who have either Pre-diabetes or Type 2 Diabetes.
  • Participants must be managing their condition either through lifestyle changes or Metformin. Metformin is a medication for Diabetes.
  • Participants must be able to attend 3 study visits as well as comply with the following study requirements at the research site for over approximately 4 weeks:
    • Participants must be willing to take the potential treatment (in capsule form) as instructed by the study team.
    • Participants must be willing to comply with all the study-related assessments, procedures and follow a specific diet as instructed by the study team.

It is the main hospital run by Capital & Coast District Health Board (C&CDHB), which serves Wellington City, Porirua and the Kapiti Coast District.

  • The research site’s waiting area is spacious enough that participants will not be within close proximity to each other.
  • Hand sanitisers are available at the research site.
  • The research staff adheres to strict hygienic practices as well as other safety measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. 
  • Any staff suspected to have COVID-19, or has come into contact with someone who has COVID-19, will automatically undergo a voluntary quarantine for 14 days.
  • Interested participants will not be left waiting for a long period of time and will be quickly attended to. 
  • Parking is available at the research site.
  • The research site/institution is taking all precautionary measures to ensure the safety of the study participants.
