About the Study
Are you curious about the health impacts of consuming tobacco and cannabis? Your experiences with these substances could offer important insight and possibly aid others!
The research team at the Medical University of South Carolina is conducting a study that leverages a smartphone app to explore the effects of using both tobacco and cannabis. This innovative approach includes sending incentives through the app to participants for quitting smoking/vaping. Join researchers in this important exploration and contribute to advancing public health by utilizing technology to make a positive change in your life and potentially others.
Why Participate?
- Participants will be compensated up to $1,030 for participating in this study. Compensation will only be provided to eligible participants who complete certain study milestones.
- Participants will be contributing valuable information that may benefit those who want to quit smoking or vaping in the future.
- Participants will be helping to advance medical research.
Your Rights
- If you decide to participate in the study and later feel that you no longer wish to be part of it, you can withdraw at any time.
- Any information that you provide will be kept strictly confidential, except as required by law.
- Qualified health professionals will monitor your health as it relates to the study.
Who Can Participate?
- Individuals who have used nicotine or tobacco products for more than 20 days within the last 30 days
- Must be willing to quit all nicotine products
- Must have used cannabis more than 10 days in the last 30 days
- Must not be using any medication to quit smoking
- Must be able and willing to complete a daily e-diary
- Must be able and willing to provide salvia samples via videos through the study app
- Must be able and willing to participate in the study virtually for approximately 6 months with 17 virtual study visits
More Study Details
The study team will explain the research in its entirety but some details are:
- Participants will be asked basic demographic questions and questions about their smoking and vaping history. A health and medical history will be completed as well.
- Participants must submit an instant-read, oral fluid cotinine sample prior to enrollment. Participants will be sent saliva and urine tests in the mail. A sample will be obtained prior to enrollment.
- Participants’ target quit date for all tobacco and nicotine products will be set and will begin the morning of day 6. Everyone in the study is expected to make a quit attempt from all nicotine and tobacco products. To help participants prepare for the quit date, they will receive brief counseling. The study team also recommends that they use other sources to help in their quit attempt, including mobile applications and texting programs.
