Background

weight lifting research study to relieve depression symptions

Previous research has shown that people with depression who also suffer from high blood pressure or high cholesterol, are at a very high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

This study is investigating how weight training can help improve symptoms of depression as well as reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This study involves two groups where participants will either follow a weight training program (3 training sessions per week for 12 weeks), or continue their existing daily routines under the care of their GP, with the option for weight training after the study is complete.

This study seeks overweight men and women who are 40+ years old who currently suffer from depression and either have prediabetes, high blood pressure and/or high cholesterol. Participants are required to attend multiple study visits at the research site over approximately 3 months.

Benefits of Participation

  • If you participate in the weight lifting exercise group, you may become fitter and experience an improvement in your depression symptoms. Your blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels may also improve.
  • If you continue to follow your existing daily routines under the care of your GP, nothing about your lifestyle should change. After the study is complete, however,  you will have the option to sign up for the weightlifting program.
  • You will be able to use the gym at the research site as often as you like for free, even after you have completed the study.
  • You will gain information about your health.
  • You will be helping to advance medical research.
