Background

Low energy and decreased physical activity are common complaints among older adults. Researchers are working on therapies to prevent and treat these problems so that people can stay energetic and active as they age.

Unexplained anaemia of aging (UAA) is an important condition that can lead to low energy, poor physical function, increased risk of falls, and decreased quality of life. UAA is a type of anaemia (not enough red blood cells in your blood) where no definitive underlying condition can be found and the cause is thought to be ageing itself. In fact, nearly 1/3 of people aged 65 years old and up with anaemia have UAA. However, UAA is often underrecognized and left untreated. Doctors and researchers believe that it is essential to develop new therapies to treat UAA, since standard treatments (such as vitamins and iron supplements) are not effective.

The aim of this clinical study is to test a new therapy, which may improve energy levels, quality of life, and activity levels in older adults who have UAA.
