A Research Study That May Help Assess Mental Development Conditions in Children

Please note: This trial has finished recruiting and is not accepting new participants.

Research Center: Flinders University Sturt Campus
Location: Sturt Road, Bedford Park, SA, 5042, Australia
Lead Doctor: Dr. Paul Constable
Ethics Committee: This study has been reviewed and approved by SA Local Health Network Human Research Ethics Committee

Background

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the early years of a child’s life are very important for later health and development. When there is a possibility that a child may be at risk, tracking their development and making sure they reach developmental milestones can help detect problems so that they can receive proper interventions.

This study will help researchers understand how developmental conditions may be detected using a new clinical test. The new test uses flashes of light to stimulate the retina (in the eyes) and record the electrical signals generated. These electrical signals could provide indicators for developmental conditions such as autism, or ADHD.

This study is looking for children aged 3-16 years old who do not have any family history of neurodevelopmental conditions. Parents may enroll more than 1 child in this study if interested and all children fit the requirements. They must attend the necessary site visit and will be given $50 for their time. The study visit will only take about an hour to complete.

  • You may identify mental development indicators in children.
  • You may help inform future studies about childhood development.
  • Compensation of $50 for participating in this study will be provided.
  • You will be helping to advance pediatric medical research.

  • If you and your child decide to participate in the study and later feel that you no longer wish to be part of it, you may withdraw at any time.
  • Your child’s records relating to this study and any other information received will be kept strictly confidential, except as required by the law.
