Background
The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) recommends how much ‘Protein Foods’ should be consumed per day and per week. Protein is essential to build new tissues and repair worn-out ones. Several factors could potentially offset protein metabolism and in turn, affect the circulating protein availability within the body. Some factors are age, quality, and quantity of protein.
This study seeks to evaluate the effect of the same portion serving of an animal protein source compared to a plant-based protein source to protein levels and availability in the body. This research will serve as an important resource for future DGA Committees to evaluate the current protein portion size definition on animal and plant-based protein-rich foods and potentially produce recommendations for younger and older adults.
This study seeks adults aged 55 to 75 years old who are generally healthy. Participants are required to attend 5 study visits (1 screening and 4 testing days) at the research site for over a period of 4-12 weeks depending on participant availability. Participants will receive $300 for completing the study. Participants must be willing to consume foods that are provided by the study.
