Background
Tinnitus affects about 15-20% of people worldwide and is a common problem. A person with tinnitus may hear unwanted ringing or buzzing sounds. This can be very distressing to an individual and may affect sleep, mood, and concentration.
There are many approaches to manage tinnitus but research evidence suggests that cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is one of the most helpful ways of reducing the problems associated with having tinnitus. This type of treatment is, however, rarely offered in the United States because of the lack of trained audiologists in CBT. This study presents a potential solution to the problem by offering CBT through the internet. This internet program provides a lot of useful self-help material in an interactive manner as well as support from a therapist to guide individuals through the program. Evidence from similar studies in Europe suggests that internet-based cognitive behavior therapy (ICBT) can be as effective as seeing a clinician.
This virtual study seeks adults aged 18 years old and above who have been suffering from tinnitus for at least 3 months. Participants must have access to a computer and the internet. The program is provided over an 8 week period. Every week new techniques are introduced, requiring you to practice them for around 10-20 minutes a day. To ensure the improvements made are lasting, there will be a follow-up questionnaire 1 year after the study period. Participation in this study may help people who are bothered by tinnitus better cope with having tinnitus.
