Research Center: University of Sydney
Location: This study takes place online
Lead Researcher: Prof Louise Sharpe

Background

Chronic pain is a major global health concern due to its pervasiveness and immense health and social consequences. In Australia alone, approximately 9.9 million workdays were lost over one year due to this condition.

Despite earlier assumptions that pain is purely a medical condition, more recent models are now highlighting the importance of psychological factors in chronic pain management. In fact, there is robust evidence to support the presence of certain biases towards pain in patients experiencing chronic pain.

A series of online training sessions called Cognitive Bias Modification for interpretation (CBM-I) is being explored by the University of Sydney to assess whether it can be effective in reducing negative biases towards pain. The online study seeks men and women who have been suffering from chronic pain for at least 3 months. Participants will spend a total of 2.5 hours to complete the intervention over a period of 4 weeks.
