Background

COPD affects 16 million people in the United States. It is a progressive lung disease caused by smoking and air pollution.

This research study at Johns Hopkins Medicine looks at COPD, diet, body composition and indoor air quality to understand how these factors affect the symptoms of COPD.

The research study seeks men and women who currently suffer from emphysema, chronic bronchitis or COPD. Participants are required to attend 4 study visits at the research site over a 9-month period and will be compensated up to $570 for participating in this study.

Why Participate? 

  • You will be compensated up to $570 for participating in this study.
  • You will be helping to advance medical research on COPD.
  • You may receive upon request the results of air monitoring done in your home.

Your Rights

  • If you decide to participate in the study and later feel that you no longer wish to be part of it, you may withdraw at any time.
  • Your records relating to this study and any other information received will be kept strictly confidential, except as required by law.
  • Qualified health professionals will monitor your health as it relates to the study.

Who Can Participate?

  • Men and women aged 40+ who: 
  • Suffer from chronic bronchitis, emphysema or COPD.
  • Are previous smokers.
  • Able to attend 4 study visits at the research site over approximately 6 months.
  • Willing to have 3 home visits by the study staff for the duration of the study.
  • Not living in an assisted-living facility.
  • Not privately insured.
