Lead Doctor: Dr. Wayne Campbell
IRB Committee: This study has been reviewed and approved by the Purdue University Institutional Review Board

Background

Many people are concerned that using antibiotics while raising animals for food consumption is responsible for creating “superbugs” that cause human illness that antibiotics cannot cure.

Because of this concern, consumers are willing to pay more for products ‘raised without antibiotics’ suggesting that they believe they will have a lower likelihood of being exposed or infected with antimicrobial resistant bacteria if they consume these products compared to animal products that do not carry that label claim.

This study will provide information about whether animal products raised without antibiotics actually have an effect on a person’s gut health. It seeks men and women willing to participate in a dietary study. Participants are required to consume two 3-week long diet interventions and attend 4 testing visits at Purdue University over a 4-month period.

Why Participate?

  • You will be provided all meals and snacks at no cost during your participation in the study for two 3-week periods.
  • You will be compensated up to $350 for participating in this study.
  • You will be helping to advance nutrition research that will determine whether the use of antibiotics in animal production affects human gut health or antimicrobial resistance.
