Background

Bipolar Disorder, also referred to as manic-depressive disorder, affects 2-3% of Americans. To date there is no exact way to distinguish between the most common causes of depression which include bipolar I,  bipolar II, and major depressive disorder. Finding a way to accurately determine the cause will help those diagnosed to receive a more effective treatment.

Researchers are looking to understand if proteins in the bloodstream, measured with a blood test, can determine if a depressed person has bipolar I disorder, bipolar II disorder, or major depressive disorder.

This study seeks men and women between the ages of 18 and 70 who have been diagnosed with bipolar type I or II disorder and are currently experiencing symptoms of depression. Participants are required to attend 6 study site visits over 2 months and will be compensated up to $350 upon completion of the study.
