About the Study


Difficulty sleeping during pregnancy can be challenging, and finding effective solutions isn’t always easy. This study aims to change that. Researchers are exploring new approaches to help improve sleep for expectant mothers experiencing insomnia.

Why Participate?


  • Study participants will either receive mindfulness therapy or usual care practices for their sleep problems at no cost.
  • Participants will be compensated for participating in this study. Compensation will only be provided to eligible participants who complete the study.
  • Participants will be contributing valuable information that may benefit those facing insomnia during pregnancy in the future.
  • Participants will be helping to advance medical research.
  • This study is entirely remote, which means you can participate from the comfort of your own home anywhere in the state of Michigan.

Your Rights


  • If you decide to participate in the study and later feel that you no longer wish to be part of it, you can withdraw at any time.
  • Any information that you provide will be kept strictly confidential, except as required by law.
  • Qualified health professionals will monitor your health as it relates to the study.

Who Can Participate?


  • Pregnant people aged 18-40
  • Must carry a singleton pregnancy (i.e., no twins, triplets, etc.)
  • Must be at gestational week 14-31 at screening
  • Must have reliable internet access to complete online surveys and engage in video meetings
  • Must not have been diagnosed with narcolepsy, bipolar disorder, epilepsy, or seizure disorders
  • Must not be currently working overnight shifts
  • Must be able and willing to complete all study procedures, including online surveys, therapy sessions, and clinical interviews during pregnancy and postpartum

More Study Details


The study team will explain the research in its entirety but some details are:

  • Participants will be asked to: complete an online survey (45 mins) to determine eligibility, followed by a brief online interview (30 mins) if eligible.
  • During pregnancy, participants will be asked to: engage in either a mindfulness sleep program with six weekly online therapy sessions or follow usual care practices, and complete online surveys and clinical interviews via video after treatment.
  • After childbirth, participants will be asked to: complete postpartum health surveys and video interviews for the first year after childbirth.

Henry Ford Health and Michigan State University Health Sciences is a joint enterprise to lead innovative research in human health sciences including mental health, medicine, implementation, and health equity. This Ford Health Perinatal Sleep Health Institute is conducting all aspects of this research including treatment, online survey assessments, and clinical interviews.
