Protein Diet and Regular Exercise May Increase and Maintain Muscle Mass In Overweight Men

Please note: This trial has finished recruiting and is not accepting new participants.

Research Center: Australian Catholic University
Location: 41 Victoria Parade, Fitzroy VIC
Lead Investigator: Prof John Hawley
Ethics Committee: Reviewed and approved by the Australian Catholic University’s Human Research Ethics Committee

Background

As we get older, it is natural for muscle mass to reduce slowly over time, limiting strength and mobility and lowering metabolism.  The rate of muscle loss can be much more severe in those that do not regularly exercise or who are overweight or obese.

It is known that resistance and endurance exercise in combination with a high-quality protein diet can increase and subsequently maintain muscle mass. This study seeks to investigate how high levels of fat in the blood effect muscle building through exercise and nutrition.

In addition to a screening visit, participants will be required to spend a full day at the Australian Catholic University.

  • You will gain an improved understanding of personal muscular strength and cardiovascular fitness.
  • You will have your blood sugar and insulin levels tested, which will show your risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes.

  • You will be helping to advance medical research.
  • You will be reimbursed for your time in the form of a Coles-Myer gift card (redeemable at these stores).
