About the Study
Grief is a universal human experience that can be overwhelming, and for some, it deepens over time instead of easing.
UNSW is leading a study about understanding how to better assess grief reactions. Why Participate?
- Participants will be contributing valuable information that may benefit those facing grief in the future.
- Participants will be contributing to a better understanding of prolonged grief and the range of emotional experiences that come with it.
- Participants will be compensated up to $200 for participating in this study. Compensation will only be provided to eligible participants who complete the study.
- Participants will be helping to advance psychological research.
Your Rights
- If you decide to participate in the study and later feel that you no longer wish to be part of it, you can withdraw at any time.
- Any information that you provide will be kept strictly confidential, except as required by law.
- Qualified health professionals will monitor your health as it relates to the study.
Who Can Participate?
- Adults aged between 18 and 75 years
- Must have been bereaved at least 12 months earlier
- Must have access to a videoconferencing platform (e.g., Zoom or Teams)
- Must have access to a laptop or computer
- Must be proficient in English
- Must not have cognitive decline that prevents understanding of experimental procedure
- Must be able and willing to attend two 1-hour sessions with a psychologist
More Study Details
The study team will explain the research in its entirety but some details are:
- An online survey that will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.
- Phone intake will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.
- Two online experimental sessions spaced one week apart that will take approximately 60 minutes each to complete via Zoom or
- Teams, including mood questionnaires, questions about loss and memories, and simple computer tasks. Responses will be video recorded.
- Participants will be asked to download an app to record feelings several times a day for a week. A follow-up assessment may be requested in 6 months.

The Traumatic Stress Clinic is recognised internationally as a leading research treatment clinic for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and prolonged grief. The clinic is involved in a variety of programs aimed at better understanding reactions to traumatic events and loss, and improving the treatment available for people who have difficulty coping with these events.
