About the Study

Your diet can have a lasting impact on your gut microbiota. The gut microbiota has the potential to influence numerous health outcomes which include obesity and colorectal cancer. Gaining knowledge about ways to achieve a healthy gut microbiota is an important step to improve population health and reduce health disparities for obesity, cancer, and other diseases.

This study aims to examine the effect of a diet-specific intervention on one’s gut microbiota. It specifically aims to study the effects of the standard American and DASH diets on racially diverse adults. The results of this study may impact clinical and public health recommendations for chronic disease prevention beyond what is already known about the standard American and DASH diets.

Why Participate?

  • Participants will be provided meals throughout the study duration at no cost.
  • Participants will be contributing valuable information to the public health community about how the DASH diet impacts the structure and function of the gut microbiota.
  • Participants will be compensated up to $250 in gift cards for participating in this study. Compensation will only be provided to eligible participants who complete each period of feeding and data collection.
  • Participants will be helping to advance medical research on the gut microbiota.

Your Rights

  • If you decide to participate in the study and later feel that you no longer wish to be part of it, you can withdraw at any time.
  • Any information that you provide will be kept strictly confidential, except as required by law.
  • Qualified health professionals will monitor your health as it relates to the study.

Who Can Participate?

  • Healthy men and women aged 19-65.
  • Must self-identify as Black or White race.
  • Must not be current smokers and heavy drinkers.
  • Must be able to attend daily study visits on weekdays at the research site over a 50-day period.

More Study Details

The study team will explain the research in its entirety but some details are:

  • Participants will be provided with a standard American diet for 7 days before being randomly assigned to follow either an American or DASH diet.
  • Participants will be asked to eat 1 meal at the study site each weekday and carry out food for the remaining 2 meals of the day. Weekend meals will be packaged for consumption at home.
  • Participants will be asked to document any deviations from the prescribed diet.
  • Participants will be asked to complete surveys and provide bio-specimen samples (stool, urine, and blood).
