Eligibility Requirements
Who Can Participate:
- Adults aged 18 or older living in the Brisbane metropolitan area.
- Able to read and understand English.
- Must currently drink lactose-free cow’s milk.
- Willing to follow a dairy-free diet during the study, except for the lactose-free milk provided.
- Agree to avoid prebiotic or probiotic supplements, lactase enzymes, and limit alcohol during the study.
Who Cannot Participate:
- People with chronic diseases (such as autoimmune, kidney, liver, or heart disease, or diabetes), inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis), or conditions affecting gut motility.
- People with clinically diagnosed mental health conditions, including major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, eating disorders, or substance abuse.
- Pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to become pregnant.
- People who smoke, have been recently hospitalised, had recent infections or vaccinations, or are currently participating in another medical or research study.

Study Process
The study team will explain the research in its entirety, but some details include:
- Participants to drink two 250mL doses of full cream lactose-free milk each day during the two intervention periods and for the 8 weeks of the study avoid all other dairy products, prebiotic/probiotic supplements, lactase enzymes, and limit alcohol.
- Participants will be asked to complete study activities, including short online surveys and cognitive testing, recording tasks in apps, four fasting blood tests and urine collections, a hydrogen breath test, four stool sample collections, and receive fresh milk deliveries.
- Participants will be asked to use the provided test kits and attend a pathology centre in South Brisbane four times during the study period, dropping off samples and completing required tests as scheduled during the trial.
