Why Participate?

  • Participants will be provided free use of digital treatment which can be accessed when and where they want.

  • Participants will be compensated up to $250 for participating in this study, Compensation will only be provided to eligible participants as they complete different parts of the study.

Who Can Participate?


  • Men and women aged 18 years old and above who have served in the U.S. Military, National Guard, or Reserves who are currently experiencing both trouble sleeping (insomnia) and feeling depressed.
  • Must be able and willing to participate in the study virtually for approximately 12 weeks during treatment and complete virtual surveys 3 and 6 months later.
  • Cannot currently be serving on active duty.
  • Cannot be pregnant, breastfeeding, or have given birth within the past 3 months.
  • Cannot have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder or psychosis.

More Study Details


The study team will explain the research in its entirety but some details are:

  • Participants will be asked to take a baseline web-based survey about their mental health and symptoms related to depression and insomnia, which will take approximately 45-60 minutes.
  • Participants will be randomly assigned to use one of five mental health apps and utilize the program for approximately 12 weeks, spending about 40-60 minutes per week on the treatment.
  • Participants will be asked to complete four additional shorter assessments throughout the study, each taking approximately 10-20 minutes, to track their symptoms related to depression and insomnia.

The URMC Sleep & Neurophysiology Research Lab was founded in 1996 and has long been dedicated to study the causes and consequences of insomnia as well as developing and testing novel behavioral treatments to address insomnia especially as when it co-occurs with other chronic conditions such as depression and posttraumatic stress disorder.
