Background

It is estimated that 1 in 8 Australians have genital herpes, a disease which often causes recurrent outbreaks of painful sores and lesions.

Once a person is infected, the herpes virus is spread during outbreaks of sores and lesions and can also be transmitted when there are no visible symptoms. Currently, there is no vaccine on the market to prevent or reduce occurrences of genital herpes outbreaks and there is a clear need for new treatments to improve the quality of life of people with the disease and to prevent transmission.

In this study, a potential vaccine for the treatment of genital herpes caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus type 2 will be investigated. This study will be the second clinical trial where this vaccine has been given to participants.
