Please note: This trial has finished recruiting and is not accepting new participants.

Research Center: Griffith University
Location: Griffith Health Centre, Building G40, Griffith University, Gold Coast Campus, Parklands Drive, Southport (shown on map)
Lead Doctors: Professor Michael Goode and Dr Danielle Stanisic
Ethics Committee: Reviewed and approved by the Griffith University Human Research Ethics Committee

Background

Although current malaria treatments are effective in most cases, it is estimated that there are up to 1 million deaths from malaria each year, mostly in pregnant women, and children under the age of 5.

Unfortunately, anti-malarial drugs and eradication of mosquitos by insecticides are becoming less effective due to the development of drug and insecticide resistance.

This trial involves studying Malaria infection, and is a precursor to a malaria vaccine trial. Participants will be closely monitored and given anti-malarial medication to completely eradicate the early stage infection before experiencing any symptoms. The study is being funded by 2 philanthropic organizations: The Atlantic Philanthropies and the Merchant Foundation.
