Research Center: Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Drexel University
Location: This study is conducted virtually and is open across the US
Lead Researcher: Mitchell Scheiman, OD, PhD, FAAO, FCOVD
IRB: This study has been reviewed and approved by the Drexel University Institutional Review Board
About the Study
Concussions, also known as mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), can cause symptoms like blurry vision, dizziness, and eye strain. These issues can affect daily life in ways that are often overlooked. Current assessments may not fully capture these challenges, and researchers want to better understand how mTBI impacts vision and overall well-being.
This research project includes three phases, and participation opportunities vary by phase:
- Phases 1 & 2: A paid 1-hour virtual session (either a focus group or an individual interview).
- Phase 3: A paid virtual interview lasting 1–3 hours, with compensation of $50 per hour.
You may be invited to participate in one phase of the research project depending on eligibility. These sessions aim to help researchers improve tools used to understand the effects of concussion. Don’t miss the chance to make a difference. Click below to join this important research study today!
Why Participate?
- Participants will receive $50 for a one-hour focus group or individual interview during Phases 1 or 2.
- Participants invited to Phase 3 will receive $50 per hour for a 1–3 hour individual interview.
- Participants will be contributing valuable information that may help researchers improve the understanding of concussion and may benefit society in the future.
- Participants will be helping to advance medical research.
Your Rights
- If you decide to participate in the study and later feel that you no longer wish to be part of it, you can withdraw at any time.
- Any information that you provide will be kept strictly confidential, except as required by law.
Who Can Participate?
- Men and women aged 18-35 with a medical diagnosis of symptomatic mTBI or concussion, and the diagnosis of a symptomatic vision problem
- Diagnosed with a mTBI or concussion in the last 30 days to 1 year
- Phases 1 & 2: Must be able to participate in a single 60-minute virtual focus group or individual interview.
- Phase 3: Must be able to participate in a 1–3 hour virtual individual interview, with compensation of $50 per hour
More Study Details
The study team will explain the research in its entirety but some details are:
- Phases 1 & 2: Participants will take part in a 1-hour virtual interview or focus group to share their experiences with mTBI-related vision challenges and how these affect daily life. Participants may also review and provide feedback on draft survey questions to ensure clarity, relevance, and completeness.
- Phase 3: Participants will complete a pilot version of the survey to help researchers refine and validate the final questionnaire for future clinical studies. This session may last 1–3 hours and will be conducted virtually.
