About the Study
Living with bipolar depression can feel isolating, overwhelming, and exhausting – but research is helping open new doors. This study is exploring a potential treatment for adults aged 18–65 experiencing depressive episodes from bipolar I or II disorder. By participating, you can receive study-related care, support, and monitoring while helping researchers advance understanding and improve future treatment options.

Why Participate?
- Participants will receive a new potential treatment for bipolar I or bipolar II disorder at no cost.
- Participants will be compensated $50 for each completed study visit, for a total of $400 offered for completing all 8 visits. Compensation will be provided to eligible participants per visit.
- Participants may be reimbursed for travel expenses for each completed study visit.
- Participants will receive: lab results, an EKG, and a physical exam by a physician.
- Participants will be contributing valuable information that may benefit those with bipolar disorder in the future.
- Participants will be helping to advance medical research.
Your Rights
- You will receive a detailed outline of all details of the study, including treatment, risks, and procedures, and you will be given the chance to ask study staff questions before you decide whether to participate.
- If you decide to participate in the study and later feel that you no longer wish to be part of it, you can withdraw at any time
- Your records relating to this study and any other information received will be kept strictly confidential, except as required by law.
Eligibility Requirements
Who Can Participate:
- Must have been diagnosed with bipolar I or II disorder without psychotic features.
- Must currently be experiencing a depressive episode lasting at least 4 weeks but not more than 12 months.
- Must be able to attend the research center for 8 study visits over approximately 30 weeks and participate in study procedures.
Who Cannot Participate:
- Must not have been hospitalized for psychiatric care (inpatient or intensive outpatient) in the past 3 months.
- Must not have been diagnosed with schizophrenia, other psychotic disorders, dissociative disorders, or neurocognitive disorders.
- Must not have had a moderate or severe substance use disorder (except nicotine) in the past 6 months.
- Must not have a history of cataracts, glaucoma, retinopathy, corneal disease, ocular inflammatory disease, significant eye injury or trauma, retinal detachment, eye surgery, or laser treatment to the eye.
- Must not have a new or unstable history of medical conditions.
- Must not have had thoughts of harming yourself in the past 6 months.
- Must not have a history of seizure disorder, stroke, significant head injury, central nervous system tumor, or seizures.
- Must not have ever tested positive for HIV antibody, hepatitis B, or hepatitis C.
- Must not have received vagus nerve stimulation, transcranial magnetic stimulation, esketamine, ketamine, or any experimental central nervous system treatment within the past 6 months.
- Must not be an employee or relative of an employee of the study sponsor or investigational study center.
