About the Study

PTSD can feel exhausting, isolating, and never-ending, but what if your own brain could help you heal? Researchers are studying an innovative brain-training technology called Prism to see if it can help Veterans and civilians with PTSD gain better control over stress, emotions, and triggers. Prism uses EEG neurofeedback – you may see a simulation that reflects your brain activity on a screen and learn how to regulate it in real time. This is a chance to try something different, something designed to retrain the brain, not just manage symptoms.

This research study lasts about 5 months, includes around 22 visits, and offers compensation for your time. Some people will receive the real Prism training, and others will receive a sham version – both are important in helping researchers understand what truly works. Your participation could help shape the future of PTSD treatment, and it might help you, too. Take the first step. Click below to see if you qualify.

Why Participate?

  • Participants will be compensated up to $490 for participating in this study.
  • Participants may experience improvements in symptoms associated with PTSD
  • Participants will be contributing valuable information that may benefit those with PTSD in the future.
  • Participants will be helping to advance medical research.

Your Rights

  • You will receive a detailed outline of all details of the study, including risks and procedures, and you will be given the chance to ask study staff questions before you decide whether to participate.
  • If you decide to participate in the study and later feel that you no longer wish to be part of it, you can withdraw at any time
  • Your records relating to this study and any other information received will be kept strictly confidential, except as required by law.

Eligibility Requirements

Who Can Participate:

  • Must be aged 18 to 65
  • Must have PTSD
  • Must be willing and able to adhere to the study schedule
  • Must be able to attend in-person sessions during the day (between 9am and 7pm) at least twice a week for 8 weeks

Who Cannot Participate:

  • Must not be enrolled in another interventional clinical study within 2 months before screening or during this study
  • Must not test positive on urine toxicology for illegal substances (except marijuana)

Study Process

The study team will explain the research in its entirety, but some details include:

  • Participants will be asked to complete clinical interviews, questionnaires, and urine tests to confirm eligibility for the study and be randomized to either the Active or Sham Prism training group.
  • Participants will be asked to attend Prism training sessions (approximately 15 total) and booster sessions, where EEG electrodes will be placed on the scalp to measure brain activity while they complete guided computer-based tasks and brief relaxation periods.
  • Participants will be asked to complete follow-up assessments, including clinical interviews, questionnaires on PTSD and mental health symptoms, vital signs measurements, and satisfaction surveys at the post-training and 3-month follow-up visits.
