Background
Adolescence is an important period of development, growth, and opportunity. Using substances like alcohol and cannabis may negatively affect learning, behavior and overall growth during this period.
The Youth Collaborative at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is dedicated to fostering healthy adolescent development and positively impacting the community. It offers clinical services, research opportunities, and education programs focused on preventing and addressing adolescent substance use.
The MUSC Youth Collaborative is currently seeking adolescents and young adults ages 14-21 years old to participate in substance use research studies. Participants who are currently using substances such as alcohol and/or cannabis, and/or nicotine use are encouraged to apply. Treatment and observational (non-treatment) studies are available. Your child’s safety and confidentiality are the team’s top priorities.
Why Participate?
- There is no cost to participate in the study.
- Compensation is available.
- The research performed by the MUSC Youth Collaborative team is reviewed and approved by regulatory institutions.
- You (Your child) will help the MUSC Youth Collaborative better understand youth and young adult substance use trends and effects on development.
Your Rights
- Research participation is voluntary. If your child decides to participate in the study and later feel that he/she no longer wishes to be part of it, you and your child may withdraw at any time.
- Your child’s research records relating to this study and any other information received will be kept strictly confidential, except as required by the law.
- Qualified health professionals will monitor your child’s health as it relates to the study.
Who Can Participate?
- Adolescents and young adults aged 14 to 21 years old.
Please note that youth below 18 years old require parental/legal guardian consent for participation in this study. - Youth interested in participating in substance use related research
- Able to attend study visits at the research site
