About the Study

According to data from the Monitoring the Future study, by the time adolescents are seniors in high school about 35% have used marijuana in the past year and 55% have consumed alcohol.  While this may be alarming to hear, you can help make a difference by joining a new research study. If you’re interested in learning about a potential way to support kids struggling with substance use, read on!

This study seeks to create content that will be used in the development of a mobile app for parents of kids who use substances. The results of this study may help empower parents to intervene in their child’s substance use before or during times of problematic patterns of use. It may also lead to improved outcomes and reduced public health implications for teens struggling with substance use.

Why Participate? 

  • Participants will help in developing a phone application to help parents of adolescents using substances in the future.
  • Participants will be contributing valuable information that may benefit kids who are struggling with substance use in the future.
  • Participants will be helping to advance research on parent management of adolescent substance use.

Your Rights

  • If you decide to participate in the study and later feel that you no longer wish to be part of it, you can stop participating at any time.
  • Any information that you provide will be kept strictly confidential 

Who Can Participate?

  • Parents/guardians aged 30 and above with a child who has engaged in alcohol or drug use and must be a caregiver of a child aged 12-17 years old
  • Must have a child who may OR may not have a history of receiving treatment for substance use
  • Must be able to complete an online questionnaire

Key Study Details 

The study team will explain the research study in its entirety but some details are:

  • Participants will be asked to complete an online questionnaire about topics such as their and their child’s basic demographics, mobile phone use, parenting strategies, current and past substance use/treatment, past experiences, and mental health history.
