How Do The Proteins In Dairy Affect Our Mood?

Research Center: Food & Mood Centre, Deakin University
Location: Barwon Health – University Hospital Geelong, Ryrie St & Bellerine St, Geelong VIC 3220, Australia
Lead Researcher: Professor Felice Jacka
Ethics Committee: This study has been reviewed and approved by Barwon Health Human Research Ethics Committee

Background

Beta-casein is a type of protein naturally found in cow’s milk. There are two main types of beta-casein: A1 and A2. Originally, all cows produced milk containing only the A2 protein. However, due to a natural genetic change that occurred in cows thousands of years ago, the A1 protein appeared. This spread throughout herds of cows worldwide, and as a result, conventional dairy products now contain a mixture of both the A1 and A2 beta-casein protein. Research has shown that A1 and A2 proteins digest differently and this may impact a range of health outcomes.

This study aims to increase understanding of how different types of milk proteins might influence our health and wellbeing, specifically in women. Women ages 18-75 are invited to participate. Those enrolled are asked to attend 3 study visits over 4 months.

Why Participate?

  • You will be provided dairy products for the study at no cost.
  • You will be helping researchers to better understand the link between food and mood.
  • You will be helping to advance medical research.

Your Rights

  • If you decide to participate in the study and later feel that you no longer wish to be part of it, you may withdraw at any time.
  • Your records relating to this study and any other information received will be kept strictly confidential, except as required by the law.

Who Can Participate?

We are seeking women who are:

  • Aged 18-75
  • Experiencing low mood
  • Consuming 1 (250 mL) or more cups of cow’s milk per day
  • Willing to consume the dairy products provided for the duration of the trial and no other dairy outside what is provided by the study staff
  • Able to attend 3 study visits at the research site over approximately 4 months
