Background

Type 2 diabetes in children is a chronic disease that affects the way the body processes sugar (glucose). Usually this type of diabetes is more common in adults, however recent years have shown a rise of incidence in children and adolescents.

This study is evaluating the safety and effectiveness of an investigational medication in adolescents with Type 2 diabetes.

This study seeks male and females aged 10-17 who are currently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes or who may be at risk because diabetes runs in their family. Participants are required to attend 10 study visits at the research site over a 1 year period.

  • Your child will receive all study medications, study-related tests and procedures, and testing supplies at no cost.
  • Your child may be reimbursed for travel related expenses related to study participation.
  • Your child’s participation may help researchers learn more about the investigational medication.

If you and your child decide to participate in the study and later feel that you no longer wish to be part of it, you may withdraw at any time. All records relating to this study and any other information received will be kept strictly confidential, except as required by the law. Qualified health professionals will monitor their health as it relates to the study.

Who Can Participate?

  • Males and Females aged 10-17 who are either currently diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes or who may be at risk due to a family history of diabetes.
  • Who now have an A1C level (if known) between 6.5 and 10.  The A1C test is a common test for people with diabetes. The normal range of A1C is less than 6.
  • Have not taken an oral medication for Type 2 Diabetes (besides insulin) in the past 3 months.
