About the Study

Men with type 1 diabetes have an increased risk of developing sexual and reproductive problems. If a man’s metabolic health affects the function of his reproductive system, this could affect the health of his future children. Learning about how type 1 diabetes can affect your fertility may help you in the long run. If you’re interested, read on to learn more!

Researchers at Joslin Diabetes Center aim to understand how diabetes and glucose control affect men’s reproductive health. Eligible participants may receive individualized medical care, including continuous glucose monitoring for the duration of the study, weekly virtual visits with a study physician, and a stipend for participation. The results of this study may also provide medical support to allow men with type 1 diabetes to improve their glycemic control. 

Why Participate? 

  • Eligible participants will receive individualized care for type 1 diabetes, including continuous glucose monitoring. 
  • Participants may learn more about their reproductive health and managing their type 1 diabetes.
  • Participants will be contributing valuable information that may benefit men with type 1 diabetes in the future.
  • Participants will be compensated for participating in this study. Parking vouchers will also be provided to eligible participants.
  • Participants will be helping to advance medical research on the reproductive health of men with type 1 diabetes.

Your Rights

  • If you decide to participate in the study and later feel that you no longer wish to be part of it, you can withdraw at any time.
  • Any information that you provide will be kept strictly confidential, except as required by law.
  • Qualified health professionals will monitor your health as it relates to the study.

Who Can Participate?

  • Men aged 18-55 who are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes
  • Must not smoke or struggle with substance, or alcohol abuse
  • Must be able to attend 2 study visits at the research site that are 3 months apart.

More Study Details 

The study team will explain the research in its entirety but some details are:

  • Eligible participants will receive individualized medical care, including continuous glucose monitoring for the duration of the study (3 months).
  • A study physician will review glucose levels weekly and work with you to adjust insulin doses. 
  • Eligible participants will be asked to complete an assessment of reproductive hormones and sperm analysis at the beginning and end of the study.
  • Eligible participants will be asked to provide blood and sperm samples.
