Are You A Smoker? Study Researches Treatment That May Reduce The Effects Of Smoking On Your Lungs

Background

Over 13% of Australians are smokers and at risk of developing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), which includes Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema.

This study is investigating whether a safe treatment can  slow down or even prevent the development of COPD in smokers.  

This study seeks healthy smokers aged 25 – 55 years old who do not have any lung condition. Participants are required to take a puffer daily and attend 4 study visits at the research site over 12 months. Participants will be reimbursed up to $200 for their time.

Benefits of Participation

  • You may reduce the effects of smoking on your lungs.
  • You will receive an assessment of your lung function.
  • You will get assistance to stop smoking.
  • You will be compensated $50 if you attend a screening visit
  • If deemed eligible, you will be compensated $50 per clinic visit thereafter (x3)
  • You will go into a draw to receive 1 of 2 gift cards worth $500
  • You will be helping to advance medical research.

Your Rights

  • If you decide to participate in the study and later feel that you no longer wish to be part of it, you may withdraw at any time.
  • Your records relating to this study and any other information received will be kept strictly confidential, except as required by the law.
  • Qualified health professionals will monitor your health as it relates to the study.

Who Can Participate?

  • Men and women aged 25 – 55 years old
  • Do not regularly use e-cigarettes
  • No diagnosis of COPD, asthma or other lung condition
  • Not taking regular lung-related medication
  • Not a frequent user of THC (more than once per week)
  • Able to attend 4 study visits at the research site over approximately 12 months
