About the Study

Research Center: Brigham and Women’s Hospital
Location: 75 Francis St, Boston, MA 02115, United States
Lead Researcher: Ali Azarbarzin, PhD
IRB Committee: This study has been reviewed and approved by the Mass General Brigham Institutional Review Board

Sleep apnea is a serious condition that causes breathing problems during sleeping. This condition puts others at a greater risk of heart disease, brain disorders, and daytime sleepiness. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy is a common and reliable treatment for sleep apnea. CPAP machines use mild air pressure to keep the airways open, and are typically used by patients who have breathing problems during sleep.

Researchers are continuously developing treatment options for sleep apnea. This research study aims to learn more about sleep apnea in the hopes that it can find people who will likely benefit from CPAP treatment. Identifying people  who may benefit from CPAP treatment may prevent the risk of heart problems and other complications caused by untreated sleep apnea.

Why Participate?

  • Participants may experience improvements to their sleeping and breathing.
  • Participants may know how CPAP affects their sleep apnea. If needed, the participant will be supplied with a CPAP device throughout the study.
  • Participants will receive information about their health and their sleep apnea.
  • Participants will be contributing valuable information that may benefit those with sleep apnea in the future.
  • Participants will be compensated up to $550 for participating in this study. Compensation will only be provided to eligible participants.
  • Participants will be helping to advance sleep health research.

Your Rights

  • If you decide to participate in the study and later feel that you no longer wish to be part of it, you can withdraw at any time.
  • Any information that you provide will be kept strictly confidential, except as required by law.
  • Qualified health professionals will monitor your health as it relates to the study.

Who Can Participate?

  • Men and women aged 21 to 80 years old who are diagnosed with moderate to severe sleep apnea
  • Must not have insomnia
  • Must not currently be treated for sleep apnea. Examples include but are not limited to CPAP and oral appliances
  • Must be willing to attend 4 study visits at the research site over approximately 3 months

Key Study Details

The study team can further explain the research study in its entirety but some study details are:
