Background

Male doctor checking blood pressure of a woman
Did you know that high blood pressure (hypertension) is the most commonly avoidable cause of death from cardiovascular disease? The University of Queensland is continuing research that found much of this risk may be due to persistently elevated central blood pressure (the pressure in the arteries close to your heart).

A major breakthrough has shown that targeted therapy to reduce central blood pressure and risk from cardiovascular disease may be possible using a low dose of a common medication called spironolactone. This is being tested in this current study. If selected, participants will take spironolactone daily and the cardiovascular effects measured.

  • You will have your blood pressure monitored over 2 years by doctors who specialize in hypertension.
  • You and your treating doctor will receive all clinical information.
  • You will be helping to advance medical research.
