Background

People with Type 2 Diabetes frequently experience a substantial fall in blood pressure after a meal which may result in fainting and falls. Currently there is no optimal treatment.

Lixisenatide (the study medication) is a drug used for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes by lowering blood sugar levels. There is recent evidence to suggest that it may reduce the magnitude of the fall in blood pressure after meals.

This study aims to determine the effect of the study medication on blood pressure after meals as well as its impact on the rate of stomach emptying and blood sugar levels. Volunteers will be asked to attend the Royal Adelaide Hospital on 3 occasions (1 x 1hr, 2 x 6hr).

Benefits to Participation

  • Your involvement will advance medical research by providing valuable information about the potential use of this medication for treating postprandial hypotension (the fall in blood pressure after meals).
  • You will receive an honorarium of $20/hour (~$260 for the entire study).
  • This study will not benefit your health because it only measures the effects of lixisenatide on one occasion and the medication will not be available to you on an ongoing basis.

Your Rights

  • If you decide to participate in the study and later feel that you no longer wish to be involved, you may withdraw freely at any time.
  • Your records relating to this study and any other information received will be kept strictly confidential.
  • The results of this study will be shared with you upon completion should you wish.

Who Can Participate?

  • Males and females aged 40 to 80
  • Patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, managed by diet alone or metformin (such as Fortamet, Glucophage, Glucophage XR, Glumetza and Riomet)
  • BMI between 19 and 35kg/m2 (check your BMI here).
  • Able to attend the Royal Adelaide Hospital during weekdays on 3 occasions.
