Can Restrictive Eating Improve Memory Function? Find Out in This Study

Research Center: Iowa State University
Location(s): This is a remote study with optional in-person MRI visits
Lead Researchers: Dr. Auriel Willette and Dr. Steven Anderson
IRB Committee: This study has been reviewed and approved by the University of Iowa Institutional Review Board

Background

Problems with blood sugar metabolism can progressively develop through old age, which is primarily due to obesity and lack of physical activity. It negatively impacts memory and brain functions and may lead to the development of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a precursor to Alzheimer’s disease.

Investigators in this study wish to engage participants with Mild Cognitive Impairment in a diet plan including intermittent calorie restriction (CR) – a form of restricted diet – to improve glucose metabolism. This results in reliable weight loss which in turn may improve memory and brain function in these individuals.

This study seeks men and women who currently suffer from memory problems. Participants are required to attend 8 study visits at the research site over an 18-week period and will be compensated up to $150 for participating in this study.
