Research Center: Florida International University
Location: This is a virtual research study in Miami
Lead Researcher: Dr. Olatokunbo Osibogun
IRB: This study has been reviewed and approved by the Florida International University Institutional Review Board
About the Study
Why is quitting cigarettes so challenging for those who also use e-cigarettes? This virtual study explores the daily experiences of adults who use both products and intend to quit smoking.
This study aims to use real-world evidence to improve intervention methods and support long-term health decisions. By joining, participants can contribute valuable insights to improve intervention methods while reflecting on their own habits.

Why Participate?
- Participants will be able to receive a list of support services that may help them with quitting smoking at no cost.
- Participants may gain knowledge about the negative health effects of using both e-cigarettes and cigarettes. They may find it helpful to share their experiences with quitting smoking cigarettes.
- Participants will receive a payment of $40 when they complete at least 50% of the daily surveys (day 7), and another $60 when they complete at least 90% of the daily surveys (day 13). The maximum total payment is $100.
- Participants will be contributing valuable information that may benefit those struggling with quitting cigarette smoking in the future.
- Participants will be helping to advance medical research.
Your Rights
- If you decide to participate in the study and later feel that you no longer wish to be part of it, you can withdraw at any time.
- Any information that you provide will be kept strictly confidential, except as required by law.
Who Can Participate?

- Must own a smartphone with a data plan
- Must be able to virtually participate in the research study for 2 weeks and be willing to provide informed consent
More Study Details
The study team will explain the research in its entirety but some details are:
- Participants will be asked to complete a baseline online survey, lasting approximately 30 minutes, with questions about e-cigarette and cigarette use, other substance use, mental health, and demographic information such as age, gender, income, and education.
- Participants will be asked to complete six daily assessments, each lasting around 30 minutes, on their mobile phones every day for two weeks.
- Participants will be asked to answer questions in the daily assessments about their e-cigarette and cigarette use, including frequency, instances, mood during use, and usage context (e.g., at home, work, or with friends).
