About the Study

Research Center: Florida International University
Location: This is a virtual research study within South Florida
Lead Researcher: Dr. Gladys Ibañez
IRB Committee: This study has been reviewed and approved by the Florida International University Institutional Review Board

It is essential to promote health and wellness among older people living with HIV. Currently, there is no known cure for HIV. However, symptoms can be managed. This is why researchers are exploring ways to help older people with HIV better control their symptoms and experience healthy aging.

Researchers at Florida International University are conducting a virtual research study called Gentle Empowering Movement (G.E.M.). This research study explores a new approach-through physical movement-that may promote health and wellness among older people living with HIV. This approach has been helpful in previous research studies in enhancing both physical and mental health among people with cancer. This study hopes to have its participants experience similar outcomes.

Why Participate?

  • Participants may experience improvements to the overall quality of their life and a lesser need for healthcare involvement. Gentle movement may help people have improved flexibility, and a decrease in joint pain, stress, anxiety, depression, and fatigue.
  • Participants will be contributing valuable information that may benefit those with HIV in the future.
  • Participants will be compensated up to $130 for participating in this study. Compensation will only be provided to eligible participants upon completion of study requirements.
  • Participants will be helping to advance medical research for HIV.

Your Rights

  • If you decide to participate in the study and later feel that you no longer wish to be part of it, you can withdraw at any time.
  • Any information that you provide will be kept strictly confidential, except as required by law.
  • Qualified health professionals will monitor your health as it relates to the study.

Who Can Participate?

  • Men and women aged 50 years old or older who are diagnosed with HIV by a healthcare professional
  • Must have reliable internet access at home
  • Must be able to attend 12 virtual sessions for over approximately 12-weeks

Any information provided will be kept confidential and will only be used for the purposes of this research study.

Key Study Details

The study team can explain the research study in its entirety but some study details are:
