Do you have HIV? Are you looking for ways to help you quit smoking? Smoking can increase your chances of getting heart disease. Researchers want to help improve the long-term health of people living with HIV.
Researchers at the University of Arizona are conducting research that may present a new potential approach to help people living with HIV who want to quit smoking. The gold standard for quitting combines varenicline with smoking cessation counseling. This study will compare adding sleep health counseling or general health counseling to see better quit rates. 

All study participants will receive the recommended treatment for smoking cessation, including counseling and the quit-medication, varenicline. In addition, half of the participants will be assigned to receive a novel sleep health intervention, and the other half, general health education counseling. Researchers know that varenicline, plus counseling, is the gold standard for quitting. A few studies suggest improving sleep health may lead to more successful quit attempts. This study wants to know if this new intervention may help adults living with HIV who want to quit smoking.

• Participants will receive the gold standard smoking cessation treatment on top of high-quality counseling sessions at no cost. These counseling sessions will be done with a health counselor and will be done remotely (at-home).
• Participants may decrease or eliminate their tobacco use. 
• Participants will be contributing valuable information that may benefit adults living with HIV who want to quit smoking in the future.
• Participants will be compensated up to $300 for participating in this study. 
• Participants will be helping to advance medical research.

• If you decide to participate in the study and later feel that you no longer wish to be part of it, you can withdraw at any time.
• Any information that you provide will be kept strictly confidential, except as required by law.
• Qualified health professionals will monitor your health as it relates to the study.
• There are no repercussions to withdrawing from this study, or declining to participate.

• Men and women aged 18-75 years old who are diagnosed with HIV
• Must smoke 5 or more cigarettes per day
• Must be interested in quitting smoking 
• Must be living in the Phoenix area or Tucson area. Although this recruitment campaign is focused on Phoenix, the study is open to people living in Tucson or Phoenix.
• Must be able to attend 1 in-person study visit at the research site and 8 virtual sessions with a health coach over approximately 9 months

The study team can explain the research study in its entirety but some study details are:

• Participation in this study involves a 12-week course of the quit medication varenicline, which is a medication that helps smokers quit.
• Participation in this study involves filling out a daily sleep diary. 
• Participation in this study involves doing a remote 6-month follow-up study visit.
