Researcher Interview

Background

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic joint disease that affects around 8% of Australians. It is commonly found in knees and can cause stiffness and significant pain.

In this short study, the differences in gut bacteria between participants with knee osteoarthritis and their healthy partners will be compared. The aim is to learn about any connection between gut bacteria and osteoarthritis, which may potentially help develop future research and treatment for knee OA.

This study seeks couples to participate, where one partner has knee OA and the other does not have osteoarthritis in any joint.  Couples are required to attend 2 short study visits at the research site and will be provided with 2 $30 Coles/Myer vouchers for participating in this study.

Benefits of Participation

  • You will be helping to advance medical research in knee osteoarthritis.
  • You will be reimbursed for your parking expenses with a free parking ticket for both study visits (if required), and for your time and other out of pocket expenses with a $30 Coles/Myer voucher at the second study visit.

Your Rights

  • If you decide to participate in the study and later feel that you no longer wish to be part of it, you may withdraw at any time.
  • Your records relating to this study and any other information received will be kept strictly confidential, except as required by the law.
  • Qualified health professionals will monitor your health as it relates to the study.
